Sitework & Earthwork Estimating Services

Scope a civil bid with the survey basis, excavation limits and utility boundaries recorded before pricing. JLG Estimating organizes the agreed earthwork, trenching, drainage and paving quantities from your supplied civil documents, with cut/fill and material-handling assumptions kept separate.

Scope and measurement basis

What the sitework / earthwork takeoff can include

Choose the items required for your bid. Quantities are grouped by the available drawing references, material or assembly, location and unit. Pricing is added only when it forms part of the agreed package.

Establish the civil measurement basis before using volume totals

Earthwork quantities depend on the available existing and proposed surfaces, datum and site limits. We review whether the supplied information supports the requested volume method before agreeing the scope. Bank, loose and compacted quantities are identified separately; shrink/swell or unsuitable-material assumptions are not silently applied as measured site conditions.

Utility trenches keep length, depth and width inputs visible, with bedding, pipe displacement, backfill and surface restoration separated as appropriate to the agreed method. Building connections are coordinated with plumbing and electrical package boundaries. Haul distance, disposal, rock, groundwater, shoring and dewatering need project information or explicit pricing assumptions rather than inference from a site plan alone.

Scope interfaces to settle before pricing

  • Confirm building-versus-site utility tie-in points for each system.
  • Distinguish measured excavation from assumptions for rock, groundwater, unsuitable soil and imported material.
  • Identify survey, permits, traffic control, testing and restoration responsibilities before assembling a priced bid.

Choose the output your bid team needs

Quantity-only takeoff

Use an itemized workbook to apply your own supplier quotes and crew rates. Keep quantities, units, locations, drawing references and measurement assumptions separate. Agree the PDF markup and summary format with the proposal.

Priced trade estimate

Build on measured quantities with the agreed material, labor and equipment inputs. Identify supplier exclusions, quote dates, access assumptions and contractor markups so your team can review the bid basis before submission.

Revision or alternate review

Identify the original drawing issue and the changed package. Keep additions, deletions and alternate quantities visible; clarify whether repricing and a revised scope letter are included in this assignment.

For workbook organization, see the illustrative deliverable layouts. These layouts show the format; project-specific samples will be identified separately when available.

Sitework / Earthwork estimating questions

The available survey and proposed grading information must support the requested measurement method. We first review surface data, levels and limits; if information is insufficient, the missing inputs are identified before promising a detailed volume takeoff.

Useful documents for a scope review

  • Current survey/topography, civil grading plans and proposed levels
  • Utility plans/profiles, sections, structure schedules and connection details
  • Geotechnical information and earthwork/pavement specifications where available
  • Site limits, demolition, erosion-control scope, alternates and addenda

What happens next?

We review the available documents and clarify the requested package. The proposal establishes deliverables, fee, revision scope and delivery milestones before estimating work starts.
